Conservation Insider- October 2024
Hello {{Constituent First Name}},
We’re thrilled to invite you to a special night of music, fun, and conservation on Saturday, October 26th, at the Old Tavern in Gruene! This exciting event is not just an opportunity to enjoy great performances from Matt Kirk and the Gueyfarers, the Zack Walther Band, as well as a special VIP Reception acoustic set from Tasman Sharp, but also a chance to support the important work of Comal Conservation. Every ticket sold goes directly towards protecting Comal County's precious land, water, and wildlife, ensuring that our natural beauty is preserved for future generations.
In addition to the music and festivities, we are honored to present the Jensie Madden Comal Conservation Award to this year's recipient at the event, recognizing their outstanding commitment to preserving our natural resources. It’s an inspiring moment you won’t want to miss!
But we need your help to make this event a success! We’re calling on our incredible volunteers to assist with various tasks, from welcoming guests to helping with the raffle and live auction. Volunteers will receive a free ticket, a Comal Conservation bandana, and a Comal Conservation hat. Volunteering is a wonderful way to support our cause while enjoying the event. Whether you can lend a hand for a few hours or stay the whole night, we’d love to have you join us in making this a memorable evening.

Frank Dietz, a Comal Conservation board member and respected wildlife aficionado recounts a loving tale of how nature captures our attention at any age. " We walked into the taller needle grasses in the adjacent pasture and the hunter to be said, 'look a large animal was sleeping here, but the cows are in another pasture right now.' I suggested we examine closely and asked if they noticed that the grasses were not"...Access the rest of the article here.
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is seeking landowners with water wells in eastern Bandera, northern Bexar and Medina, and parts of Comal and Kendall Counties who are willing to participate in a groundwater study of the Edwards and Trinity aquifers.
Hydrologists from the USGS are currently developing an initial well inventory to identify wells that they can include a study that will be used to gain a better understanding of long-term trends in groundwater levels in the aquifers, areas of groundwater depletion and recharge, groundwater flow paths, and cross aquifer communication.
To accomplish this goal, USGS staff will need to gather water-level data from as many wells within the study area as possible. They are requesting landowners that may have functioning groundwater wells within the Edwards and Trinity aquifers for permission to include their wells in the study. You can read the full study proposal here.
Water levels will be measured throughout the study area in January and August of each year for a period of 2 to 5 years. Participants in the study will be provided the water levels measured in their well each time a technician collects measurements. Knowing the water level may help landowners better prepare for future water level changes.
